When we contacted Instagram’s favourite Rainbow-haired Beauty, she was super excited to join YEAY. But there was one problem – she had never made videos before! Despite this, Hieu was determined to figure it out herself, and she did a great job. You can check out her fun videos on the app. In this interview she shares some valuable tips she learnt while making her first videos for YEAY.
Interview by Jayne Phillips
Tell us a bit about yourself Hieu!
Hi! I like chihuahuas, boba, spicy foods and good conversations.
In 3 words, How would you describe your style?
Casual, girly-ish, fun-ish
How did you find yourself in the world of fashion and blogging?
I moved to L.A. three years ago and didn’t know anybody. I got a lot of collaboration requests through Instagram for shoots and I used that as a way to make friends. And it all grew from there 🙂
What was it like making your YEAY videos?
I was actually a little nervous at first because I never film videos. So as I started shooting, it was like a little adventure and lots of fun. I managed to make the videos completely by myself in my backyard using a tripod and my Nikon D5300. At first, I actually filmed everything horizontal which is the incorrect format for YEAY – but since I had my ideas down, it was super easy to recreate everything and jump around and remake the vertical videos.
Do you have any video tips you’d like to share with the YEAY community?
Hmm… A tip is to do weird stuff in the video because you’ll have more fun and you can always edit it out! I used Adobe Premier to to put the video together and add music.
What’s your favourite YEAY video you’ve seen so far?
It was a half naked man wearing pink shorts I believe? He was on a floaty in a pool, selling this fabulous pink cowboy hat. I love outlandish things.
(That would be the wonderful Candy Ken!)
If money were no object, what would be your dream YEAY video to make?
Oooh boy. Well… I would want some crazy good CGI of myself riding a unicorn around a theme park and then we can transition to running on top of the clouds. Then ya know, I fall gracefully off the unicorn into one of those colorful ball pits and land in the middle of a crowded street in Japan. Something ridiculous like that, that doesn’t make too much sense but has a lot of beautiful visuals. And I would be wearing a badass outfit that I would sell on YEAY.
Tell us about your craziest impulse buy on the internet… Did you regret it?
Pink Hello Kitty acoustic guitar. And no, absolutely not.
What has been your favourite OOTD this season?
I really love the ‘pairing a black choker with almost everything’ look. And also matching sets, you can never go wrong with your outfit looking like it goes together.
Do you have a favourite inspirational message or quote to share with the YEAY community?
‘Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.’ – this one never moves too far away from the top of my favourites list.
