Everyone’s favourite blonde blogger Rachel Lynch is a gal whose style epitomises all that is New York. Her Instagram is filled with iconic shots tottering around the streets of Lower Manhattan in thigh high boots, extravagant fur coats and oversized sunglasses, or sipping champagne on her balcony, against a backdrop of the city skyline and exuding her powerful ‘I don’t give a f##k’ attitude.
But the secret to her success is that she is truly cosmopolitan, not to mention somewhat of a style chameleon. From one day to the next her followers are wowed by high class editorial shots of her lounging in Parisian Hotels in lingerie, horseback riding on the beaches of Nicaragua to her most recent snaps of her looking sultry in the mist atop of the Great Wall of China.
And now you can get the I Hate Blonde look yourself! Rachel’s selling a few of items on YEAY that her biggest fans are sure to recognise from her memorable photo shoots. We were lucky enough to catch up to discuss style tips, champagne breakfasts and life in New York.
Interview by Jayne Phillips
Tell us a bit about yourself Rachel, how did you get into the world of fashion blogging?
I started my blog when I was 18. Before that though, I was having my dad drive me to downtown Detroit to shoot all these vintage outfits I would style. He was the best and so supportive. This was back in 2008, when shooting “looks” was hardly a thing, but he went with it and knew I was just a creative little spirit.
What does a typical day look like for you? From your instagram it looks like getting up early and going for a run – you are an inspiration!
I do workout a lot. I recently started training at the Dogpound gym in Soho, which has been an incredible experience, but at heart I’m a runner. My dad is a very accomplished distance and trail runner, (see how much he influences me, haha!) So I learned the art of running from him. I usually get my best creative ideas when I’m running.
If I’m not working out, I usually have a shoot. It’s either something I’ve magically set up in my loft, or I’m shooting out on the streets of Soho. I recently just finished my book which will be out soon, so I’ve been writing and shooting for that a lot.
Most days consist of working out, a photoshoot, iced coffee, and spinach dumplings! (my current favourite!)
Your fashion shoots are always stunning and we can tell you put a lot of effort into them. Can you explain a little bit about your creative process behind them?
Like I said earlier, I get my best inspiration when I’m on a run and listening to music. Music and books inspire me, I’m always reading something. Usually ideas will come to me when I’m running, reading or listening. I also get a lot of inspiration from my spirituality/faith. I love infusing everything in my life to create magical images unlike anything else. I love film. I love real. I love raw. I like showing people a little glimpse into my magical life in Soho.
What’s been your favourite OOTD this year?
Probably what I wore this Wednesday, my rolling stones tee, a tiger stripe faux fur jacket + Jeffrey Campbell thigh-high stud boots.
Maybe a tricky question, but what’s your favourite item in your closet right now?!
My vintage Rolling Stones tee for sure bro.
What was is it like making your YEAY videos – did you have fun?
It was really fun! I usually don’t do video work, so it was a challenge to shoot something that wasn’t just for still images.
If money were no object, what would be your dream YEAY video to make?
I would be running around the streets of Paris in faux fur, and then drinking champagne at the Four Seasons with my best friends <3
Do you have a favourite place to shop in New York?
I love What Goes Around Comes Around, it’s an incredible vintage store in Soho. So much high-end stuff like Chanel & the best vintage band tees ever.
I heard a rumour that your parents are FBI agents, can you confirm, or would you have to kill me if you told me?
Haha! I actually can’t talk about what my grandfather does, but he’s been very successful working for our government : )
What’s the most memorable YEAY video you’ve seen so far?
There was like a crazy one on a boat right? That seemed insane!
Do you have an inspirational quote you’d like to share with us?
Oh I’ll share with you a few of my favourites!
“If you want anything to happen, you must first expect it of yourself. The greatest among us have unlimited imaginations, anything now real was once imagined.” — Wayne Dyer (he’s one of my favourite people in the entire world!)
“Our lives are an eloquent expression of our beliefs.” — St. John
“Excellence is doing a little bit more than you have to do.” — Eric Thomas (Another one of my mentors and favourite people!)
“You are the sum total of all the choices you’ve made up until now.”
& “The will to do anything comes from within yourself.”
