Folktales, myths, nature: Handmaids Cosmetics recipes revealed

Maia and Tania believe in natural beauty. The products in their skincare range, Handmaids Cosmetics, combine essential oils, herbal extracts and cold-pressed oils, to give customers natural skin food filled with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

We spoke with Maia, to talk ingredients, inspirations and tips.

Tell us a bit about Handmaids Cosmetics?

Handmaids began as a personal project and evolved into a career, one balm at a time. I started out as an apprentice at Formula Botanica, where I learnt the art of creating natural cosmetics. And I’ve been learning the trade for the past couple of years through a combination of practice, mastery and mystery. I’ve loved being a part of small markets and larger fairs and watching the seed I’ve sown organically start to grow.

Where are you based?

We are based in Sofia, Bulgaria, Europe 🙂

When did you launch?

Officially we started in the spring of 2014.

What motivates you to do what you do?

The greatest motivation is the super positive feedback we get from people who use our natural cosmetic brand. We’re also massively motivated by the first timers who try it and then switch to it and nothing else.

What are the inspirations behind Handmaids Cosmetics?

The endless lavender fields of central Bulgaria, the legacy of the Rosa Damascena and the folk tales, myths and stories.

How would you describe your brand style in one sentence?

Witchcraft botanicals.

What’s your all time favourite item from Handmaids Cosmetics?

That would be the Carrot Eye Cream.

How did you get into natural beauty?

As I love saying: It all started with a rash… as funny as it might sound I was eager to find a cure for a rash I had and little by little I found myself enchanted by the magic of the beautiful, powerful world of natural beauty.

What’s your advice for anyone who wants to create their own natural beauty brand?

Plan carefully, stick to the rules, be patient and don’t give up.

Why do you think video is important for selling?

It gives the client a much better understanding of the texture, usage and lifestyle of the product. It’s a bit like having a tester for the skincare range you are selling.

What are your top three style tips?

Hydrate your skin during daytime, drink plenty of water, clean your face before you go to bed and always brush your teeth 🙂  that and keep on laughing!
