Ambivalent: fashion with a Berlin skate of mind

American street style just wasn’t cutting it for Pawel and Carolina, so in 2011 they set up Ambivalent to put Berlin’s sleek, stripped back skater look on the map.

We interviewed the founders to find out how simplicity, creativity and curiosity came together to form Ambivalent Berlin.

Tell us a bit about Ambivalent Berlin.

Ambivalent Berlin is directed by founder Pawel and his partner in crime Carolina. As a sub-cultural founded lifestyle brand, we grew up with skateboard and street culture. Pawel spent his entire youth, skating the Kulturforum and National Gallerie. We mix high fashion, sports and streetwear with youth culture and art creating the best possible product. Designing one of a kind, high quality garments. Designed in Berlin. Made in Europe.

Whereabouts are you based?

We’re based in Berlin obviously 😉  In Schöneberg.

When did you launch?

What motivates you to do what you do?

Being passionate about realising our vision. And of course the fact that it is a cool feeling, seeing other people in the streets wearing our clothes.

What are the inspirations behind Ambivalent Berlin?

Skateboarding, music, photography. Art in general.

How would you describe your brand style in one sentence?

Ambivalent is all about curiosity, creativity and simplicity, designing one of a kind, high quality garments.

What’s your all time favourite item from Ambivalent Berlin?

Difficult question…. we’d say the Bad Seed Black Hoodie is our favourite. And the best collaboration was with Sandqvist, designing a backpack.

How did you get into designing clothes?

Pawel started designing clothes, because the former skate brands couldn’t provide the sleek look. So he had to do it.

What’s your advice for anyone who wants to create their own brand?

The most important thing is passion. You have to love what you’re doing, since it is hard work to build a brand. Furthermore you should have a strong power of endurance, because it takes time to establish yourself. Then of course a good seed capital is helpful.

Why do you think video is important for selling?

This new way of selling by video is the most “honest“ presentation of products to the buying public, since nothing can be edited, like in pictures e.g.

What are your top three style tips?

  1. Wear what suits you the most.
  2. Establish your own style.
  3. Quality over quantity.

What’s on your Spotify playlist right now?

Many different kinds of music. From hiphop to deep house. And of course the tracks by Carolina. Check them out!
